Adventures in Pucón, Chile

We were finally Patagonia bound but first we decided to make a quick stop in the gorgeous lakes region of Chile and visit Pucón. Known as a hub for adventure seekers, Pucón is a cool city where you could find a variety of activities varying from skiing, rafting, rappelling, hiking up a volcano crater or just relaxing in the hot springs. During high season the city is full to the brim with foreigners and locals alike looking for some fun and relaxation. Lucky for us (and our budget) we visited during low season and were able to enjoy the city without so much commotion or the jacked up prices. We had a lovely time in this beautiful city and will definitely put it down as a city we would return to.

When you first arrive in Pucón you will notice two incredible things immediately: the remarkable Villarica volcano looming over the city and the stunning lakes that surround you. You will feel worlds away from the big city and really feel like you have just stepped into a theme park (I didn’t believe it until I was actually there). The city center is quaint and streets are lined with wooden lodge-like buildings. We were lucky to visit around Christmas time as the streets were decorated and illuminated at night making Pucón even more charming.

Pucón is very tiny which not only gives it a comfy small-town feel but also makes it walk able and pleasant. Try to book near the city center if you can afford it but being just outside the center is no more than a 15-20 minute walk and prices are a bit more reasonable. We booked a room at Hostal Maitahue, which was comfortable and a good value for the price at $25 USD per night.

There are many tour companies around town offering different adventures. We really wanted to climb up to the volcano crater (6-hour hike uphill) but since I was still recovering we opted for the shorter 2-hour hike to the base instead (15,000 CLP/pp). We booked our tour with Pucón Aventura, which I would highly recommend since their prices are reasonable and we had a really fun time with our guide. The morning of our hike it was raining and we were not even sure we would be able to see the volcano. However, our guide assured us that once we were higher up in elevation it would be clear. He was totally right! The sights were breathtaking and we spent an incredibly pleasant day up near the base.

We also visited Trancura Hot Springs (10,000 CLP). They were situated about 30 minutes from town in a beautiful and remote location. The pools were very hot and we had the option to choose the ones located inside or outside. On the way back after dark our driver stopped to show us the volcano. It was a beautiful sight to see the fiery red lava contrasted against the night dark sky.

Back in town we stumbled across Playa Grande where we had a couple of beers at the beach. The lake was fabulous and the weather perfect, it was quite enticing to make our way into the water but we refrained. At the beach you could rent kayaks, paddle boats, sunbathe or just hang out near the shore. The scenery surrounded by the mountains was just perfect. Don’t forget to visit Muelle La Poza. From here you can get an unobstructed view of Villarica volcano while lounging on the grass in the park nearby. You could even go on a scenic boat ride that will cost around 5,500 CLP for a 1-hour trip.

Pucón has plenty to offer in terms of restaurants and nightlife. We ate fresh sushi (a lot of it!) around town at both Black Forest and Dejavu Sushi. We had a really delicious lunch (and dinner) at Trawen. All of their vegetables are picked fresh from their own garden and their homemade lemonades are out of this world! For a fun night out try Mamas and Tapas. They have great drinks and a live DJ. Here you can mingle with many fellow backpackers and laid-back local tour guides. For mouthwatering desserts, artisanal chocolate and strong coffee, don’t miss Café de la P.

– Pucón is just an 8-hour bus ride from Chile’s capital of Santiago

– Don’t miss visiting Huerquehue National Park by bus. Get there early for a full day of trekking.
